Sump Pump
What Is A Sump Pump?
Installed beneath the basement or crawl space in your home a sump pump drains excess water that may flood your home. During the rainy season homes are at risk of flooding, the sump pump (which is an automatic pump) drains liquid and moisture from the sump basin or the basement/crawl space preventing flooding in emergency situations.

How Do Sump Pumps Work?
Before water reaches your basement or crawl space, it will first start filling up in the sump pit (a 2-feet deep, 18 inches wide hole beneath your basement/crawl space). When the pressure sensor or float activator arm is triggered in the sump pit, the pump starts working to drain the water out of the pit and away from your home. In some instances, a backup sump pump or secondary sump pump is necessary for basements that are larger.
The water that would accumulate in your basement usually comes from cracks in the home’s foundation. These cracks can’t be seen and can’t be avoided, so when there’s excessive rain, the water seeps in through these cracks and causes flooding.
Does My House Need A Sump Pump?
More than 60% of homes in America experience basement dampness and low level flooding every year.
There are a number of factors that could determine if your house needs a sump pump. Most modern homes that are built today in areas that experience quantities of snow or rain have sump pumps built into the basement.
If your home is in a low-lying area, the soil around it could house water. This is where it could be a good idea to upgrade to one of these pumps. If your basement has flooded in the past, it’s also a good idea to consider a sump pump.
If you find that your basement is regularly quite damp or you want to have an extra level of protection for larger basement that you finished, installing a sump pump battery backup (to make sure that these systems can activate even when the power has been knocked out) or even a full secondary pump can be beneficial.
